As a study of the outer form of Freemasonry it is well presented. 

 

What then of a study of the ritual and its origins?  For example much of the structure and format of the ritual is taken from Mithraic practices.  How did that happen?

You will find this subject, and almost everything else of a masonic nature, amply dissected in the annals of A.Q.C.

Very briefly though, cultures throughout the world and throughout the ages have embodied initiatory ceremonial practices.  It would appear to be a part of the human condition.
