The First Speculative Freemason

Those of you with a Facebook account might find the recent posting "The First Speculative Freemason." interesting:https://www.facebook.com/GrandLodgeScotland/posts/1011093335642914:0

For those of you who haven't it makes a case that the first Speculative Freemasons were William, Lord Alexander his brother Anthony Alexander (the King’s Maister o’ Wark – Master of Works) and Sir Alexander Strachan of Thornton - not Elias Ashmole.

My response to this (bit of Claymore rattling :) ) article was:

Unnecessarily misleading article! Anyone who knows that Ashmole was initiated in 1646 is unlikely not to know that Moray was Initiated 5 years earlier in 1641. They are also unlikely not to notice that Ashmole was Initiated by Freemasons who have been identified and who were also not stone masons by trade. Furthermore in his 2006 book "York Mysteries Revealed" the Rev. Neville Barker Cryer identified dozens of non-stone masons Initiated into the Old (not Grand) Lodge at York. The earliest non-stonemason he found was Initiated in 1571 and was a fishmonger.
